Poufed Out!

Ever had a complete DIY flop? Usually if I have a huge glitch then I just go in another direction, or redo it...But this time, I did not even know I was about to have a major flop. So here is what happened...I found this great vintage footstool (future pouf), in the FREE pile at a garage sale. As usual I could not just leave it behind, so in the car it went...here is the original...
Dirty, but has potential!
I have seen a few people paint vinyl and leather, so I figured Why Not?
One person somewhere on the blogosphere (wish I could find it), painted a leather chair with chalk paint and it looked great. That was all the encouragement I needed. I cleaned the leather with alcohol and got busy...
Before Cleaning
After Cleaning...looking better
2/3 paint with 1/3 sheetrock mud
Start the painting...
First coat
2nd Coat
I was really liking the look after the 2nd coat of chalk paint...who doesn't love turquoise, right? It was looking a little plain, so I decided to do a colorful pattern on the top. I love the little samples at Home Depot...only $2.49 for any color you want! Not bad if you only need a little paint, and you want a specific color.
Here is what I used...
Yellow, Orange and Green
Next step....paint some pretty circles...like so...

Yellow
Green and Orange
Here it is....I loved it!
The only thing left to do...wax and enjoy....or so I thought!
While preparing to wax I noticed a tiny spot where the paint had come off...just a little tiny spot...OH SAY IT ISN'T SO!
It was so....the paint did not adhere to the leather. Aggghhhh! I couldn't have discovered this BEFORE I painstakingly painted tons of little polka dot circles? Of course not! I rationalized that maybe it was just a small area...or maybe it didn't have time to cure, or maybe.....it was just a flop! So, what did I do?.....
Are you one of those people that love to peel? If you are, then you know it...if you are not then you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. Well, I am a PWLTP (person who loves to peel), and so I made the best out of my disaster....I peeled ...with only a few tears....

No fair...sniff
sniff, sniff
I peeled til' I felt a little better and now I am trying to decide what to do with my failed pouf. I did learn that you should always prime, or use a leather paint. I guess I will also have to admit that Annie Sloan chalk paint must have something that my homemade paint doesn't have....I'm just all poufed out!
Sooo Sad!
Have you had a failed project?
Did you fail early on or at the end?
What did you do with it?

Thats a shame it looked great ! What if you used something like saddle oil on it or the oil that you use for baceball gloves or leather furniture oil or cleaner that might help protect it and keep paint from peeling and give the leather moister maybe the paint peeled because you used alcohol to clean it, sometimes using alcohol drys things out IE leather or wood ! Have you tryed craft paints for fabrics .I hope it works out for you ! I am not a DIYer Papa here is , a wood worker / handy man not to much flops with him he is very picky and searches info before he starts anything PSSTTT ! A bit to picky if ya ask me lol ! Have a good day !

Try mixing some unsanded grout in with flat paint. I did a leather top drum table and it stuck to it?

I'm so bummed for your flop. I thought it looks so great when you had painted it.

Lori - it looked so great! I totally understand a fail - I am still perplexed at how badly my slipcover for my wing chair turned out - maybe you could slipcover this little poof.....just don't take any sewing tips from me....LOL

What a bummer! It was beautiful. At least you were able to have some fun peeling it off, invite me next time, heehee.

I saw someone use Rub'n Buff on a leather chair. That looked really cool. The puff would be a good project to try it.

Oh dear--it did look great! That must have been frustrating!

Oh, what a bummer! It was looking sooo good! We've all had fails, some recoverable, some not. I just recently painted a table, and put a transfer design on the top. HATED it! All my friends saw the picture of it and loved it (or so they said) But I eventually painted over all of it with a union jack flag, SOLVED!

Oh Lori! I'm so glad we found each other in the blogosphere! That sounds like something that would happen to ME! It looked beautiful. Will there be a second attempt?!

Hi Lori! Thanks for finding me in blogger land! I loved the pouf, pre-peel! I have a trashed furniture find that I have been trying to figure out for about 2 years now (my first try didn't work either). Thanks for inspiring me to get back to it!

Awww...that's so sad. You have some great pictures of it! When you get it figured out you can do something similiar. I hope it works out for you.

Oh man! That's the worst feeling - but at least you got to peel a whole bunch of paint with - I too find this to be strangely stress relieving. Maybe you could make a slip cover from fabric for it??

What A Bummer. Dang. All that work...all those dots. How disappointing! I have a leather chair that is orange and I'm happy with it now but envision growing tired of the orange eventually (craigslist deal) so I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a good leather makeover. Your next project will be twice as good to make up for this one!!!
